Dr. David Fattu is a native Arizonan who was born in Page, grew up in Glendale, and currently resides in New River. As a young musician, David was an active participant in the music programs of Peoria Unified School District including marching band (trumpet/drum major), jazz band (bass guitar), symphonic band (String Bass/student conductor), and chamber choir at Ironwood High School. As he began his studies at Arizona State University in Instrumental Music Education, he became involved in different performing ensembles and organizations including the ASU Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Sun Devil Marching Band, the Music Educators’ National Conference, and the American String Teachers’ Association (VP of ASU Student Chapter of ASTA). After student teaching with the high school band at Centennial H.S. and elementary string orchestra at Shaw Butte E.S., Dr. Fattu started his professional career as a 5th-8th grade band director in Peoria USD.
Three years later, he founded the Peoria District String Orchestra to allow students across the district to play in an orchestral strings ensemble.
Dr. Fattu worked in different staff development positions in Peoria USD before moving towards a career in higher education instructional design. Dr. Fattu earned his education doctorate degree in 2022 from Gwynedd Mercy University. After a 17-year career in higher education curriculum development, Dr. Fattu returned to K-12 music education in 2024. Currently, Dr. Fattu is the band, choir, orchestra, and music teacher at Sunrise Elementary in Deer Valley Unified School District (Phoenix, Arizona). He is an active member of the American String Teachers' Association (ASTA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the Arizona Music Educators Association (AMEA), the Arizona Choral Educators Association (ACE), and the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA).
Throughout his professional career in education, Dr. Fattu has had the privilege to offer private music lessons in string bass, cello, violin, viola, and bass guitar. This extra ‘gig’ started after graduation from ASU in 1996 and continues to provide Dr. Fattu with a source of professional satisfaction and joy working with students of all ages and skill levels. While Dr. Fattu has seen many of his students go on to study music at the university level, that is not his main focus. Dr. Fattu finds his greatest professional joy when he is able to instill a strong sense of appreciation and passion for the art of music performance within each of his students that will be with them throughout their lives.
